What inspired you to create art? Questions surrounding human life and how we interact with one another inspires me to create.

Source(s) of inspiration?

  • The intricacies of constructing an identity in a racialize society
  • Understanding the past and how it affects our lived experiences, today
  • An almost worrisome thirst for knowledge and gaining information

Artists you are inspired by:

  • Elizabeth Catlett
  • W.E.B. Dubois
  • Aaron Douglas
  • Augusta Savage
  • J.M.W. Turner
  • Just to name a few…

What memorable responses have you had to your work? People have come up to me at opening exhibitions and thanked me for acknowledging the diversity within the Black Community. Once we understand there are differences in our cultures we can celebrate those differences over a hot plate of “delicious” food and amazing conversation.

What’s the message you are trying to get across with the pieces you’ve done? The simple answer is… My work begins with a question and when the work is complete, I have the answer I was seeking.

The creation process is personal for me because from my perspective a thing is created. Now, what the viewer does with that visual information is completely up to them. By the time my work is displayed my intent or message is less important.

Can you explain your creative process?: I’m always interested in the acquisition of knowledge, so I keep a collection of questions near me at all times. When it is time to begin a project, I start with the question and as my understand of the subject improves so does the work. When I have an answer, the work is finished.

Favorite pieces you’ve made and why?: My favorite work thus far is “Native Born Black: A Collection of Questions” because the viewer can participate in the collection by writing directly on the work a question of their own. So, a work created by one person now has multiple authors. I love it.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given? Befitting to an artist like myself the best advice I’ve received was a question, who do you create for?

Can you send examples of your work, that we can share on our site? I’ll send you three images or Hair Theory, Picture of myself, Gallery shot.
