Ethnic Background / What do you identify yourself as? : Pakistani / I identify as a Pakistani American Muslim
What inspired you to create art?:
My own loneliness. I started writing at a very young age, and I knew that it was the one place where I could be completely raw and honest and no one could take that away from me. It’s also the one place I feel very confident in. Also writing helped me deal with so many issues such as identity and trying to find a place to belong. being Pakistani and growing up in the Bronx, I felt I didn’t belong anywhere so laying that all out in writing helped me sort myself out.
Source(s) of inspiration?:
A lot of song lyrics, listening to experiences and stories of other people, the news, desi culture.
How do you spend your time to get into the creative process?: I listen to music, read a lot and also when I’m going through something emotionally. Also if I’m listening to someone else’s life story or any topic that I’m very passionate about such as Mental health, domestic abuse, relationships in the family and current events.
Favorite pieces you’ve made and why?:
One of my all time favorite is a very short poem I wrote back in College: I buried my past and grew a garden on its grave. I was going through a tough time where I was trying to grow up and change myself. This poem just summed up everything I wanted to do at that time.
